2019 Annual Report
DownloadHow much of my donation will go to administrative costs?
We use donations to satisfy a range of different requirements. The COVID-19 pandemic as an example has meant schools have closed, food supply chains have been cut and the ways we usually rely on income generation are no longer possible. Therefore at the current time, all donations not earmarked specifically for Special Projects are going towards the general running of the village to make sure the children’s basic needs are met and the staff are paid. In more normal times donations may go towards urgent projects or go towards covering any shortfalls in income generation. If we look on average year to year, approximately 10% of donated funds are spent on administrative costs.
How does One Heart Foundation decide where to spend income?
One Heart has a clear governance structure that ensures all financial matters are discussed at the board level, and then a minimum of two board member signatures are required for financial authorisations.
Decisions on where to spend income are made in alignment with our Annual Operating Plan.
Are the One Heart board members remunerated?
No. All board members both in Australia and East Africa are appointed on a volunteer basis. No paid member of staff is eligible to be part of the foundation board to ensure there is no conflict of interest.
Is One Heart affiliated with any companies, political parties or religious organisations?
One Heart Foundation is an independent organisation with an autonomous board and governance structure. We do however have Partners who work with us to help deliver specific projects. These may be individual companies, churches, or community groups.
Is One Heart Foundation a charity?
One Heart Foundation Limited is a not-for-profit organisation registered with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission.
Is My Donation/Sponsorship tax deductible?
Yes, One Heart Foundation is a registered nonprofit, tax-exempt charitable organization (ABN 78 602 804 599). Donations are tax-deductible as allowed by law. At the end of the financial year we’ll send you a tax receipt for all monthly donations received. Single donations will receive a receipt shortly after each donation has been processed.
Will the money I give go directly to my sponsor child’s care?
All sponsorship money is pooled to contribute to the care, education and health of all children at One Heart. You will however have a personal connection to one child through letter writing and other updates from the management team.
Can I choose which teacher I sponsor?
Yes, you may. We will hire teachers on an as needs basis. At the time of your sponsorship, we can advise which teachers are not sponsored. Your sponsorship will allow One Heart to divert funds from salaries to the running costs of the village or to fast track Special Projects.
Can I send the teacher I sponsor gifts?
We endeavor to create an environment of equity and equality at One Heart, for children and for all staff members. As such, we prefer to centralize gift-giving and letter writing around key dates like Christmas and will provide all sponsors and supporters with options to select from that eliminate the need for printing and postage.
Can I sponsor a teacher for a specific time period? E.g 1 year.
Yes, you can nominate a time period or you can cancel your sponsorship at any time. The beauty of sponsorship lies in the ability to communicate with and develop a relationship with the teacher you sponsor over time. This is a very meaningful experience for many of our sponsors. However, we do understand that people’s situations may change and being a sponsor may one day not be an option viable to you.
Will the money I give go directly to the teacher I sponsor?
Yes, your money will cover the salary of the teacher you sponsor. One Heart Foundation covers the salaries of all teachers without sponsors. Sponsorship allows One Heart to divert funds from paying salaries to other projects that will expand our impact in the region.
